De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU)’s new Officer Team is now complete for 2017/18 with the election of a new Mature Students’ Representative and the creation of a brand-new role.

Louise Cunliffe – our current Disabled Students’ Representative – has been voted in as the incoming Mature Students’ Representative, while Kelly Davies is elected to the new position of Postgraduate Students’ Representative.

More than 100 students voted in the By-Elections, in addition to the 5,455 De Montfort University (DMU) students who had their say in our main Elections in March. You can read more about our record-breaking Elections here.

Kelly, who was also named as February’s Course Rep of the Month earlier this year, said: “I’m really excited to be elected as the new Postgraduate Students’ Representative as it was something that I was really passionate about this year.

“It means the world to me as this is something that I worked with [VP Student Activities] Ahtesham Mahmood to set up and I’ll be honest, I wasn’t ready to hand my baby over yet.

“What I hope to do is start to get more postgraduate students involved with our students’ union. Whether it’s through establishing a Course Rep system for MA, Research and PhD courses, encouraging more people to partake in societies, sports teams and Demon Media or inspiring postgraduate students to run for officer roles.

“I also want to arrange events during #FreshFest17 that are exclusive to postgraduate students, so that those starting DMU can meet new people who are also postgraduates.

“I would encourage students to get involved by attending the events I plan during the year and advise any student, regardless of if they are an undergrad or postgrad, to get involved with their SU because the skills and knowledge you gain is amazing.”

Louise, who in her current role has run a number of campaigns and held a Disability Awareness Day, said: “I am thrilled that I have been elected for the third year running and look forward to taking my skills and experience in a new direction as the incoming Mature Students’ Representative.

“With a large proportion of our student body classed as mature students, I want to get their opinions and ideas on board to help improve their university experience, so am aiming to encourage them to voice their opinions – good and bad – so that I can then move forward with their needs in mind.”

The new Officer Team take office from July. You can meet the new team voted in to #LeadYourDSU here!
