For the first time in De Montfort University (DMU) history, the DMU Rowing club has pre-qualified for the world-famous Henley Royal Regatta (HRR).

The Henley Royal Regatta is the pinnacle event of the rowing calendar, which sees crews from all over the globe come to race.

DMU Rowing were selected for the Regatta after their stellar performance, in which they won Championship Double Sculls at Marlow Regatta. Marlow Regatta is regarded as one of the ‘big three’ summer rowing events.

Held annually on the River Thames, the 180-year-old competition attracts the highest caliber of rowers. The Regatta will have 23 events, with a maximum of 32 crews able to race in each event. The category that DMU will compete in has 12 entrants.

The Henley Royal Regatta includes a pre-event trial, in an attempt to whittle the number of crews competing. Usually, only a couple of crews are exempt from the pre-trial, of which DMU is included.

The stakes are high for our very own Rowing club, which will see them brushing shoulders with an international Tokyo Olympic crew.

Derrick Mensah, VP Student Activities said: “I think it’s a great achievement for DMU and for the students as well.

“I hope that DMU Rowing’s achievement will encourage other sports clubs to excel in their fields and hopefully it will inspire students to aim for the top, being the best that they can be.”

A massive congratulations to the team and good luck at the Regatta! #TeamDMU
