VP Welfare and Community Candidate

I’m Sophie and I’m running to be your next Vice President Welfare and Community.

I’m actively involved with the Union:

  • Media School Representative (SRC), representing students academically
  • Student Voice Frontrunner, working on campaigns and democracy
  • Work part time for Activities, offering societies and sports clubs support
  • Drinkaware Club Crew, offering support to students on nights out

If elected I would:

Mental Health:

  • Ensure that at least one staff member in every department was Mental Health First Aid trained
  • Lobby for easier access to mental health services on campus
  • Seek partnerships with local mental health services and charities in Leicester

Housing:

  • Host a housing fair on campus for students to have easier access to lettings agents and landlords
  • Run a ‘find your flatmate’ event for students struggling to find places to live

Student Safety:

  • Work with the Mandala Project on consent workshops and provide Bystander Intervention Training to tackle sexual harassment
  • Create a Safe Taxi Scheme – students can use their student cards to get a taxi home and buy these back from Reception the following day
  • Train more students to be part of the Drinkaware Club Crew to ensure students are safe in the DSU Venue
  • Lobby the university to create an anonymous forum for reporting hate crime on campus – we can’t just ignore it, it happens at DMU.

Sexual Health:

  • Create a ‘SHAG’ (Sexual Health and Guidance) Week campaign to raise awareness of the importance of sexual health  services on campus such as the SHH clinic (drop-in service where students can access contraception)

I promise to work collaboratively with the other Officers on events such as: Black History Month, LGBTQ+ History Month, International Womens’ Day and Disability Awareness Day

I’m an approachable individual who is here to listen and support YOU.

Vote me your #1 VP Welfare and Community.
