De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU) know that being part of a student group is one of the best things you can do for your mental wellbeing.
That’s why, for one week only, we’re making society memberships completely FREE as a way to help #DeStressU!
Ahtesham Mahmood, VP Student Activities at DSU, said: “For one week only, the Activities department and I have decided that the membership fees for students should be lifted to get one step closer to removing all barriers to getting people involved in societies.
“We decided to align this with #DeStressU because of the massive influence that joining a society can have.
“I had quite a low day a couple of weeks ago, and when I headed downstairs where the Kuwaiti Society were celebrating their national day. They sat me down, shared their history and culture with me, and involved everyone.
“For me, that was amazing. That whole community feeling is one of the five steps to wellbeing; so joining a society and having that sense of belonging really helps.”
From Monday 6 to Friday 10 March, De Montfort University (DMU) students can come to the DSU Reception (with your student ID) and choose any society – one per person – to join…for absolutely nothing! You’ll then be added to the membership list straight away.
DSU will then pay for the membership on your behalf, which will be transferred straight into each group’s self-funding account at the end of the week.
Ahtesham continued: “What really happens when you join a society is you get welcomed into an extended family, and you can use those friends as a support network.
“That is why I thought it was so important to align this initiative with #DeStressU because of the wellbeing side behind our fantastic student groups.”
As students, we often have a lot going on. From lectures to assignments, day jobs to exams – not to mention the general pushes and pulls of day-to-day life or having a social life!
Sometimes we’re so busy spinning these dozens of plates, that we forget to make time to look after ourselves – especially at peak stress times such as exam season.
That’s why we’re bringing back our hugely successful #DeStressU campaign. Read more here.
