VP Welfare and Community Candidate

Everyone has the right to be at university, I want to make students feel that way. Throughout my  time at university I’ve been part of a large community by being Co-chair of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer+ (LGBTQ+) Society, being a Brand Ambassador and taking part as a DMU vlogger. I feel a massive sense of pride at the support the SU has for its students and I want to be a part of that, to carry on this fantastic work and to make a difference. I love hearing people’s stories, engaging in discussions and being approachable.

The SU has inspired me to give back to the union and make it better. I aim to do this by:

  • Uniting societies by creating a Welfare Network. This will allow extra support for society members as their committees will be able to signpost them to helpful services. It will also allow more collaboration for events created by societies.

  • To create a LGBTQ+ safe space that is accessible to LGBTQ+ students and allies in order to get information and welfare.

  • Improve coordination amongst the Part Time Officers to help them achieve their goals. I believe collaboration creates bigger creations and by working together we can create impact events.

  • Put on more opportunities for student talent in conjunction with welfare events. For example during Black History month have Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) students showcase their talents through festivals and displays.

  • Re-establish Interfaith Week to highlight the diversity at university as well as sparking discussions and creating engagement.

  • Added awareness on mental health amongst men by improving mental health services across campus.

  • Make anti-hate training mandatory within societies to ensure the safety of members and committee members. This will then lead to a Anti-Hate mentor programme.

Thank you
