What is Street law?

Students for Students - SfS

Street Law is a student-led organisation that has been running at DMU for nearly 17 years!!

Street Law is a fantastic initiative which allows students to contribute to life at DMU. We are a society passionate about the law and developing our skills to help others. We would like to encourage you to join our community, not only to support you in maximising your academic success but also to boost your employability.

Why should you attend?

  • Meeting like-minded students - Through our weekly workshops, socials and projects, you'll be able to meet like-minded and driven friends. Having people around you who are hard-working will motivate you to go beyond your potential.
  • Fundraising – Street Law takes the initiative raising funds to support local charities - so we aim to raise money throughout the year. Often this is through bake sales, but we are open to new ideas!
  • Developing skills and character - Street Law is an excellent way to build on the legal knowledge you will gain during your degree. It equips you with skills that are invaluable for your later career. You will gain confidence in giving presentations and being a group member working towards a common goal.
  • Weekly workshops - Our workshops are held via online platform MS Teams, where we will discuss new topics of law. We will then use the knowledge and deliver it to other people through projects. Last year, we hosted the Law Club (a Leicestershire club for 6th Formers interested in law) and taught our guests about criminal and contract law. Our workshops will also develop your commercial awareness and teach you why it's important and how to use it.

SO... Street Law can help improve your skills in presentations, research and communication. It can help you to build confidence inside and outside of university life. We are a welcoming and friendly Society who carry out presentations within the community and provide plenty of exciting volunteering opportunities - you even get a certificate at the end of the year! And you don't even have to know a thing about the law - we do all the research ourselves!! So come and join us to see for yourselves; we hope to see you there. We will have a table at the Freshers Fair so pop along to see us find out more :)

Our goals

We have numbers of ideas which we would like to achieve during this year. We aim to:

  • to inform and aware people in schools and colleges about the law through the delivery of educational  and interactive legal presentations;
  • assure that all students views are listened and considered regarding Street Law Society issues and ideas, and taking steps to initiate the changes you want to see;
  • continue promoting student's cooperation and communication to build the relationship between first-year students and senior year students;
  • advance student feedback through an email survey, suggestion boxes and face-to-face contact to implement sessions more tailored to what student's needs;
  • improve current meetings, create an online workshop and forum to encourage students to exchange tips and ideas. As well, to give practical advice and guidance for first-year students. I wish that members believe in their abilities. As well, to provide useful information and guidance for all students;
  • to promote the visibility of the Street Law Society.

I believe these aims will positively impact the Street Law Society, and I hope that the society will continue to develop through the cooperative work of the committee, members, and staff. I would like to contribute my time and academic and professional experience. As well as the above ideas I promise to work hard, and I ask you for support during this difficult time.

General Objectives

  1. To educate students and organisations on current legal issues and enhance their understanding of the law.
  2. To provide members and students with a voice and the necessary skills and confidence to express their views and arguments.
  3. To equip members and students with the necessary knowledge and understanding required to confront a legal issue and provide a solution.
  4. To analyse and discuss current socio-legal and political issues.
  5. To create an impact or challenge an issue with firm arguments and actions.
  6. To make a difference.
