De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU)’s VP Student Activities has invited all student group committee members to the Activities Training Conference at De Montfort University (DMU) – to ensure you have the best possible year in 2017/18.

The conference, being held next Tuesday 19 September, is for the newly elected committee members of societiessports clubsDemon Media and volunteering groups as well as any keen DMU volunteers looking to improve their skills.

Activities Training Conference is completely FREE, but you’ll need to sign up first. You can sign up here.

Derrick Mensah, VP Student Activities at DSU, said: “Activities Training Conference is a day all about equipping our committee members for the upcoming year and also share ideas about how to make sure your group is the best it can be.

“Oh, and the best bit? You get to see me there.”

Sessions will cover everything from how to look after your group’s finances, to using social media and beyond – both with the Activities team and with experts from DSU, the university and elsewhere.

Derrick explained the conference will feature sessions he wishes he had recieved when he was a student group committee member.

Derrick continued: “Students are going to leave not only aware of the challenges you’ll face, but also feeling empowered for the year ahead.

“There’s also a new session for this year in terms of mental health and support for student group members, which is something I really wish I had when I was on the committees of societies.”

Plus, there will be an opening keynote from Derrick – who was previously on the committees of the African Caribbean SocietyStudent Choir and DMU Steppers – and a closing speech from DMU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dominic Shellard.

“We’ve once again split the day into breakout sessions talking about each role’s responsibilities to ensure your committee leaves with a rounded understanding of what needs doing and how you can best achieve your goals,” Derrick explained.

“And it will also be good to get your feedback to make sure we are moving in the right direction in ensuring we give the best support possible for your sports club, society or volunteering group.”

More details and a full agenda will be sent out over the next few days, so keep your eyes peeled and make sure you’ve signed up here!

Sessions at the conference will cover a wide-ranging number of topics, designed for each individual committee position.
