Earlier this year, your Student Voice Leaders (SVLs) supported the NUS Don't Freeze Our Futures campaign by submitting evidence to the Treasury Select Committee's inquiry into Student Loans and the Taxation of Graduates. This was an important opportunity to ensure that the experiences and concerns of DMU students were represented as part of the national conversation on student finance and the long-term impact of the current student loan system.
We are pleased to share that the Treasury Select Committee has now published its report, highlighting concerns about the fairness and affordability of the current student loan system. The Committee has called on the Government to reverse the freeze on the student loan repayment threshold, recognising the increasing financial pressures faced by graduates, as well as recommending wider reforms to improve the system.
We're also proud that De Montfort Students' Union's submission was included as part of the written evidence considered by the Committee. This means the experiences shared by DMU students, alongside evidence from students' unions and organisations across the UK, helped inform the Committee's discussions and recommendations. It is a great example of how student voices can contribute to national policy discussions and help influence future change.
While the Government has not yet confirmed whether it will implement the Committee's recommendations, this is a significant milestone for the campaign and demonstrates the value of students coming together to raise issues that affect their education and future finances.
