Last week was Student Volunteering Week at DSU. Hundreds of you got involved in an action-packed week of activities and projects all with the aim of really making a difference to the community. Here’s a run down of what we achieved...
#DSUGoodDeeds – Monday-Friday
Throughout Student Volunteering Week we have been challenging you to go out and perform some of our #DSUGoodDeeds. These can be as simple as donating food to shelters, giving blood or donating books to the DSU Book Swap Shelf. If you’ve been nominated or want to nominate others you can do so by posting a video on Twitter or Facebook with #DSUGoodDeeds. More information can you be found at: https://www.demontfortstudents.com/news/article/dsu/Have-you/
LOROS Clothes – Monday-Friday
DSU Volunteers helped raise awareness of LOROS and more specifically clothes donations for their charity shops. Clothes have been donated from staff and students alike, plenty signed up to the LOROS lottery too!
Action Homeless Arts – Tuesday
Over 30 volunteers took part in our arts project during #SVW2015. We supplied the paint, the brushes and canvases and the students created the masterpieces! Every single painting has since been donated to Action Homeless for one of their projects; Action on Empty Homes. Here they renovate empty properties in the city and bring them back in to use as homes for homeless people, they currently have around 20 properties, a mixture of family homes and shared houses for single men. Each painting will help turn a house into a home for their service users.
If I Knew Then What I Knew Now – Wednesday
We spent the day on the Campus Centre Steps asking students to ask them to contribute to the #DMUTimeMachine on what advice they would give themselves if they went back through their time at DMU. This was held by the mentoring and befriending projects at DMU. They were DSU’s peer mentoring programme for new students, MyUniPal, Employability Mentoring, International Buddies and DMU Mentoring.
Learning for the 4th Age Arts Project – Friday
A group of volunteers headed down to Agnes House to decorate Easter Eggs. This project saw two generations meet and work collaboratively to decorate the eggs. Feedback from students was extremely positive and the plans have already started for another visit to continue to good work and expand on the relationships built between our volunteers and their residents. The finished articles look fantastic!
Post Pals - Friday
Over 20 smiles were posted to sick children on Friday for Post Pals. Post Pals Is a charity sending letters cards and small gifts to sick children and their families. Volunteers decorated cards and write letters to send to their chosen post pals at our smile table.
Action Homeless Sleepout - Saturday Night
16 volunteers simulated the experience of sleeping rough on the Campus Centre steps for 11 hours. This was all done for the local Leicester based charity Action Homeless, that work to reduce homelessness in Leicester, to raise awareness of what a night on the streets as a sponsored sleepout. Our students faced cold temperatures, interactions with the public and hard uncomfortable surfaces while trying to get some sleep. If you would like to donate to help this charity you can still do so at: www.virginmoneygiving.com/dsusleepout2015
