Normal service was resumed last week after the New Year’s break as many DSU sports sides made their first BUCS appearances of 2016.

Out of 14 fixtures, our teams claimed six wins – four away from home – and three draws, but also fell to eight defeats.

From those that emerged victorious, men’s rugby firsts were the day’s biggest winners, thrashing Staffordshire (Stoke) firsts 98-15 at home in the Cup, and progressing to the QFs in the process.

Elsewhere, women’s football seconds rivalled that win against Nottingham Trent fourths with a drubbing off their own, triumphing 9-1 away from home, and their first-team counterparts came away with a 4-1 success, too, from University of Bedford seconds.

Men’s badminton’s firsts and seconds also enjoyed successful away trips, storming to 8-0 and 6-2 victories against Oxford Brookes seconds and Bishop Grosseteste firsts respectively.

Men’s football 3rds overcame University of Lincoln seconds with a narrow 2-1 home win to make up the half-a-dozen victors.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, netball firsts fell to a 55-28 away defeat to University of Nottingham fourths, while University of Northampton firsts were too strong for men’s hockey firsts – the Demons on the end of a 7-0 reverse.

Sharing the points were men’s football seconds away at Nottingham Trent’s fifths with a 1-1 draw, men’s tennis with a three-all scoreline at home to Anglia Ruskin firsts, and men’s lacrosse, who drew 8-8 at home to University of Derby firsts.
