We know that not *everyone* wants to join a sports club. That’s fine.

We know that not *everyone* wants to be part of a society. That’s okay.

But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get involved with activities during your time at De Montfort University (DMU). That’s why Derrick Mensah, VP Student Activities at De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU) is spearheading a new initiative to increase the ‘buzz’ on campus.

The Faculty Championships, coming in 2018, are a series of different competitions between the four faculties at DMU, plus partner colleges and university staff – and we think it’ll be a highlight of your time at university.

Derrick explained: “I’m sure as you were coming to university you had a dream of coming to meet loads of people from different backgrounds of life and becoming friends with them.

“Well, the Faculty Championships is going to give you that opportunity. This new initiative which aims to bring everyone under one roof, having loads of fun and competing, and just enjoying each others’ company.”

Derrick spoke at last week's Vice-Chancellor’s Activities Dinner about creating unity at DMU.

The first event – The Faculty Challenge – will be a game-show style event hosted by Derrick, taking place in February. That will be followed up by The Faculty Talent Show and The Faculty Games later in the academic year.

“We have a range of activities for every kind of person,” Derrick continued. “It doesn’t matter what you like, you can get involved in everything we are doing.

“You can bring your friends, come together, and if you can’t compete you can watch. Just be there, and you can find something fun for yourself.

“I promise you, it is going to be a great event throughout the year.”

The six teams will be headed by ‘Faculty Ambassadors’ – students who will represent, coordinate and captain their faculties through each event.

Derrick explained: “You will gain a lot of skills [as a Faculty Ambassador]; you will become a motivator, an enabler, and most importantly you will be a leader for your faculty.”

Details of the first Faculty Championships event will be distributed in early 2018. We’ll see you there!
