Running a society or sports club, representing your course mates or just helping another student settle into university life might not sound like much, but it all adds up.

Here at De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU) we know that all of our volunteers are brilliant.

So we did some number-crunching to work out just how much of an impact they really have on both De Montfort University (DMU) and the wider community, as well as see what a difference they’ve made to themselves, too. (Because did we mention that volunteering looks great on your CV?)

Ahtesham Mahmood, VP Student Activities at DSU, said: “I am immensely proud of the hours logged by our volunteers last academic year and I hope we can surpass that total once again this year. These numbers clearly display how important volunteering is, not only for our student body but also to our community.

"Volunteers have had an enormous social impact on the health and well-being of our local community inputting a massive equivalent of £173,000, and it’s crazy to see how much of an impact giving an hour here and there makes.

"The impact those voluntary hours create is massive. As a students’ union, we enable opportunities across the board; from being a 'hero of #FreshFest16' to a member of the part-time officer team.

"And while it’s one thing to log hundreds of hours to complement your CV, the actual goal is to gain personal development. Volunteering allows you to get involved with new things and enhance social, technical and academic skills which you simply won’t learn in a classroom.

"I’d honestly encourage everyone to volunteer at least once whilst they’re at university just so you can see everything for yourself. You can make so many new friends whilst learning so many new things.”
