Greg James, Mistajam and Jason Bourne (no, not that one) are among the big names heading to De Montfort University (DMU) next month as part of the Student Radio Association (SRA)’s annual conference.

De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU)’s community radio station, DemonFM, is hosting the conference – for the second time in five years – from Wednesday 19 to Friday 21 April 2017 and will be welcoming some of the most important names from across the radio industry to the DMU campus.

The list of keynote speakers and seminar session leaders announced so far includes;

  • Greg James – BBC Radio 1
  • Christian O’Connell – Absolute Radio
  • Mistajam – BBC Radio 1 and 1xtra
  • James O’Brien – LBC
  • Amy Voce – Gem 106
  • Ryan Arnold – Capital
  • Jason Bourne – BBC Radio Leicester

Ollie McGrath, a third-year Media Production student and DemonFM’s Head of Programming, said: “I am really excited that some of the people who I have listened to for the whole of my life are coming here to DMU to spread their wisdom and it will be a really good opportunity for DemonFM memebrs to learn off of the very best.

"In particular, I am really looking forward to Mistajam because nobody knows new music better than him. It will also be really nice to have a chance to be able to socialise with all of these big names and show them how great DMU is."

The conference will also play host to the SRA’s ‘I Love Student Radio Awards’, of which DemonFM are nominated for a record SIX awards. Read more here.

Mike Mayes, VP Media and Communications at DSU, said: “I am really excited to welcome everyone to DMU, and raise the bar for SRA conferences once again.

“There are even more names to be announced, and I just think the fact that we have got all of these big names is a real testament to the incredible, constant and very difficult work that is put in by members of Demon Media, especially the management team, whose commitment is unwavering and ambition is through the roof.”

Mike explained that he is particularly looking forward to James O’Brien – of LBC Radio fame – sharing his experience of tackling big issues on the radio.

“I’ve been a big fan of his work for a while,” Mike said. “He first came to my attention during the lead up to the EU Referendum [last year] and I think the direction that he has taken radio in is really interesting.

“He has focused a lot on the visualisation of radio, which is something that the whole industry is now turning its attention to, but also the ‘virality’ of radio online.

“But on top of all that, I am really excited to see other stations and students’ reaction to our campus and our facilities.

“Working with the station on this has made it an incredibly fun year helping them realise everything that they want to achieve.”

Limited tickets are still available for the conference, which takes place from Wednesday 19 to Friday 21 April, here.
