Laura Flowers

Hello!

My name is Laura and I have been your Academic Executive for the past year and I'm so excited to be running for re-election!

Within the past year I have:

  • Improved our representation system to better empower our Course Reps to make a real difference.
  • Worked to improve personal tutoring system across the university.
  • Ensured Lecturers are taking the additional needs of Joint Honours students into account.
  • Lobbied the university to finance placements for those who can't get any funding for them.
  • Worked with the university to begin to implement a student-led group to change the way we are taught.

This year has been wonderful for so many reasons, however I will be honest and say that this job is one that takes a while to learn and get used to, and although I have managed to achieve a lot in a year, I can achieve a lot more in another as I now have the skills to do an even better job.

The things I'd like to achieve in my second year are:

A difference in the way lectures are presented

We pay £9250+ a year to come to university and get our degrees, and we deserve to get a quality education for that. This means to push Lecturers to create more creative and interactive ways to teach us, as we deserve more than just to be read words off a slide.

Decolonising the universities regulations surrounding Academic Offences

Although DMU is doing some wonderful things surrounding Decolonising DMU, more work needs to be done regarding ensuring that our regulations are fair and just to every student.

This includes ensuring that regulations are more culturally appropriate, so every student has an equal chance of achieving.

Empowering our Course Reps

This year I have been so fortunate to work really close with many of our Course Reps and watched them achieve so many wonderful things which I am so proud of them for doing. However, they deserve that recognition

If re-elected, I shall ensure that our Course Reps are able to have accredited training to add to their CVs, have more of an opportunity to shout about the changes they're making and really feel part of a change-making community.

Having our Voices heard nationally

As much as I'd like to promise things such as free tuition fees, we need the support from Unions across the country to be able to do so. Therefore, to have our voices properly heard on these problems, I am pledging to have more involvement with the National Union of Students (NUS), to make sure they are able to push the government for what our students stand for.

Thank you so much for reading my manifesto!
If you want to discuss any of these points further, please come and chat to me when you see me campaigning on campus- I'd love to hear your voice.
