DMU Barbell is aimed towards powerlifters and anyone with an interest in health and strength sports. Powerlifting is the objective of moving as much weight as possible over three compound lifts; back squat, bench press and deadlift. Training requires commitment and dedication and inspires a good work ethic in and out of the gym.

Established in 2018, this is a lifting club formed by a group of friends who love lifting and want to encourage more students to take it up as a sport. Powerlifting can educate individuals with a knowledge of nutrition, basic anatomy and sports psychology, all of which contribute towards lifting weights. Physical strength can in turn help to achieve great mental strength, as strength sports are a marathon and not a sprint. Strength training provides a healthy way of measuring your success as an individual. Powerlifting is a way of testing yourself to consistently develop your strength and improve your own skills. Even with a competition, the aim is to do the best you can do and beat your previous records.
We include group workouts where members can meet up to lift together as well as a support network for lifters needing advice. Club training runs once a week on Saturdays at TAB24 gym (Near Filbert Village).
Our society is open to all levels of skill, from National lifters to those who have never picked up a barbell before. The beauty of strength sports is that it doesn't matter what age, weight or gender you are, it is open to everyone. We aim to help members towards competing at divisional competitions as well as national competitions such as the British University Championships and the British Junior Classic Championships. We are part of the North Midlands Uni Championships with other local universities; Loughborough, Nottingham, Nottingham Trent, Derby, Lincoln and Leicester.
