Share the Wear, a free clothing swap event run for students, brought together sustainability, community, and support - helping 130 students walk away with clothes at no cost.
Originally, the initiative started as a way to support students who are transitioning, offering access to clothing that helps people feel more like themselves without the financial pressure that can often come with rebuilding a wardrobe. Held during DMU Pride, the event created a space that felt especially relevant, affirming, and community driven.
At the same time, Share the Wear responded to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, recognising that many students are struggling with rising expenses. Having access to free good-quality clothing isn’t just a nice extra; it can be genuinely impactful. Seeing over 130 students come through and find things they loved really highlighted just how needed this kind of initiative is.
As my first event as Student Voice Leader - Communities, Share the Wear was something I really wanted to get right; not just as an event, but as something that made a difference. The idea itself was simple: donate what you don’t need, take what you do. But the atmosphere on the day turned it into much more than that. People were helping each other pick outfits, hyping each other up, and creating a space that felt welcoming and supportive.
The fact that the event was also sustainable makes it even more powerful. By giving clothes a second life, Share the Wear helps reduce waste and challenge fast fashion, showing that supporting each other and supporting the planet can go hand in hand.
Pulling this together as a first event was a huge learning experience, but seeing the impact it had made it completely worth it. This is definitely just the beginning, with plans already in motion to make Share the Wear more regular and accessible for students throughout the year.
Thank you to everyone who donated, attended, and supported the event – you made it what it was!
