De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU)’s newest society is hoping to attract like-minded members from the massively popular world of Pokemon GO.

The new Pokemon GO society was the brainchild of Audio and Recording Technology student Corey Smith, who joined forces with three other De Montfort University (DMU) students to create a group based around the game played by millions around the world.

Corey, 23, is chair of the society and said: “With the release of [the game] I wanted to help bring people together through their love of Pokemon.

“I’ve already met new friends from the game just from looking for Pokemon around the campus and wanted to join a society to meet new people and share a common interest.

“As a society our plans for the rest of the year are to entertain and produce a numerous amount of activities that are all Pokemon related and that bring people together.

“We don’t want to spoil our list of activities we have planned just yet, it’s a surprise for the Pokemon members you but if you love Pokemon and your intentions are to catch them all just like us then this society is for you!”

Corey had never been part of a society before, but he checked the groups on offer at DSU on the page here and when he couldn’t find what he was looking for decided to set one up himself.

“A lot of planning and preparation had to be considered before applying for the society to be approved,” he said. “I needed to weigh up all the positives and negatives, consider potential events and what the society’s aims are.

“Before handing in the application I had to find an additional three committee members to help set up and run the society.”

After finding fellow committee members Richard, Aiden and Niya, the society application then had to be approved by VP Student Activities Ahtesham Mahmood. In term-time new societies are approved by the Societies Panel, comprised of Ahtesham and leaders from various student groups.
