We’ve got a number of great opportunities to work within De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU) in the latest round of Frontrunner internships.

De Montfort University (DMU)’s innovative Frontrunners scheme is designed to give students the chance to gain and develop a range of transferable skills while also boosting their post-graduation employability.

Placements are either three, six or nine months in length and up to 10 hours a week during term-time and are designed to fit around lectures and studies. As well as that, students are paid the Living Wage.

We’ve got a wide range of vacancies within DSU, working alongside the teams from Student Voice, Marketing and Communications, plus Volunteering and Societies.

Sam Chambers, a third-year Journalism and Creative Writing student, has been working as a Press Officer Frontrunner within the DSU Marketing and Communications department since November, taking the skills and abilities he has developed on his course and putting them into practice.

He said: “I’ve enjoyed the role immensely and, with the support of the communications team, learnt a great deal from the experience.

“It’s been great to put into real-world practice the things that I’ve been doing as part of my course, developing my interviewing skills and news and feature writing, as well as learning about how to write in different tones of voice for different audiences.

“I’d recommend to anyone looking to gain themselves some all-important work experience to apply for one of the Frontrunners positions, particularly as there are so many roles available, meaning everyone should be able to find something that suits their skills and fits with their course.”

Tom Nicholls is the Volunteer and Societies Manager at DSU and his department works closely with a number of Frontrunners.

He said: “We’ve worked with the Frontrunners team for a few years now and each round we’re able to provide rewarding and worthwhile opportunities to students.

“I’ve seen firsthand how confidence has grown and the students have quickly become part of our organisation.

“I would strongly recommend every student to look into the Frontrunners scheme across the whole of the university, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved in – including some great roles at DSU!”

As well as the vacancies within DSU, there are also a number of roles available working for our award-winning student media group, Demon Media, ranging from deputy editor of The Demon, to a Demon Online web developer and from Demon TV station manager to Demon FM’s head of programming.

Applications for all Frontrunner positions close on Thursday 14 April.
