De Montfort Students’ Union’s Saudi Society have been crowned the first ever winners of DSU Sports’ Intra Mural Futsal League.
With seven teams entered, students have had the opportunity to play competitive futsal against other students on the DMU campus at the Watershed in the first league of its kind.
The futsal league was headed up by two voluntary Football Activators, Bavia Dulabh and Loren Whyte, who have worked tirelessly in delivering the league, organising fixtures and refereeing matches.
Loren said: “It was a lot of fun, and a great experience. The league was very competitive, and was fantastic to be a part of. I would advise anyone who wants to volunteer in this role next year to give it a go!”
The inaugural Intra Mural Futsal League was played over eight weeks, with teams battling it out every Monday and Tuesday. There were outstanding performances, spectacular goals and interesting team names, including ‘6ix Squad’, ‘Just Below Average’ and ‘Sex, Drugs and Carlton Cole’.
The students gave everything to stake their claim at lifting the inaugural Futsal Shield, but there can only be one winner. And unbeaten after ten games with nine wins and one draw our first ever league winners are the Saudi Society!
Mohammed Bajahzar, captain of the Saudi Society team, said: “We played very well and we faced some really good teams. However, we set our goal at the beginning to top the Futsal League and stay there. And we did!
“I would also like to thank the football activators, who have done a great job in organising the league.”
Jake Betts, Sport Development Co-ordinator at DSU, said: “Congratulations to the lads from the Saudi Society team!
“The Intra Mural Futsal League has been a big success this year, and will be even bigger next year with even more sports to choose from – watch this space!!
