A message from your Student Voice Leaders.
A moment of reflection for Khaleed and support for our community.
Over the past week, many of us have been trying to make sense of the tragic death of Khaleed, a fellow DMU student. We know this has been deeply upsetting, particularly for students who feel closely connected, and for communities across campus who are holding a lot of grief, shock, and unanswered questions.
As your Student Voice Leaders, we wanted to share how we’re creating space to come together with DMU to remember Khaleed and support one another.
Moment of Reflection - Wednesday 11th February 2026
Hawthorn Square
4:50pm – 5:40pm
On Wednesday, we will be holding a moment of reflection in Hawthorn Square. This will be a calm, shared space for students, and indeed the wider DMU and city community, to come together to remember Khaleed.
We will be sharing a short reading, and flowers will be available for anyone who wishes to lay one for Khaleed. There is no expectation to say or do anything, just you being there is enough. We really encourage students to attend if they feel able to support one another.
Book of Condolence
At the moment of reflection, there will be a physical book of condolence, where students can write a short message or note for Khaleed which will be shared with his family.
We know not everyone will be able to come onto campus, so we’ve also created a digital book of condolence. If you would like to share a message, memory, or tribute, you can email: tributetokhaleed@dmu.ac.uk
Messages sent to this address will be included in the book of condolence for Khaleed’s family.
Online Community Space
DMU has also created an online community reflection space, where you can read messages of support that have been shared from across the UK for Khaleed, for his family, for DMU staff, and for the wider Leicester community. This space is there if you want to read, reflect, or simply see that you’re not alone in how you’re feeling.
DSU Welcome Refresh activity
Out of respect for Khaleed and our collective grief, the Students’ Union has taken the decision to reduce Welcome Refresh activity this week. Our full Welcome Refresh Fair will now take place on Tuesday 24th February.
That said, the Students’ Union building will still be open, with smaller, lower-key activity continuing. We want to strike a balance between holding the seriousness of what has happened, while also encouraging students to come together to talk, make friends, and support one another on campus.
Wellbeing and support
There are a number of wellbeing activities happening this week, including the Mental Health Café, Wellbeing Wednesday, and student yoga. Full details can be found here and our social media.
If you need more support:
Please don’t feel like you have to handle this on your own. Whether you come to the moment of reflection, write a message, attend a wellbeing activity, or simply take some time for yourself, all of that is valid.
We’re holding this together
