Let’s talk about the V Word.

Volunteering.

Here at De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU) we love volunteering! From society committees to helping out in the community, from wannabe media moguls to wrapping gifts for needy children, our volunteers get involved in all sorts.

And to celebrate all of that great work – plus to show how you can get involved with even more great opportunities here at DSU, we’re joining in with the national Student Volunteering Week 2016 from 22 to 28 February...and we’ve got a tonne planned.

‘So you want to volunteer?’ kicks off the week on Monday 22 February. The session runs from 10am to 5pm in The Lounge and we’ll have a load of organisations – including CoppaFeel, Action Homeless and Vista among others – come in to tell you exactly why you should get involved in volunteering be it helping others or getting a gold star for your CV.

Tuesday 23 February sees our Charity Challenge Day from 11am until 2pm in The Lounge. If you fancy a challenge for charity then our DSU Volunteering team have a series of reaction games for you to take part in, involving 1,200 balls. Yep.

Fancy finding out where you can volunteer close to campus? Want to discover more about the culture within Leicester? Then come and take a walk with us on Wednesday 24 February for Walking Wednesday. There will be two walking tours with two different routes, one looking at places you can volunteer right away in Leicester and another looking at cultural and faith opportunities within the city.

Thursday 25 February is a busy one! We’re running the Painting Project from 11am until 3pm in The Lounge where you can come along, unleash your artistic flair and paint a picture. All the paintings that you create will be donated to a local charity to use with their service users. Thursday is also takeover day at DSU, where our sports clubs and societies can get involved in projects and activities across the local community to make a real impact.

After a week crammed with volunteering, Friday 26 February is all about us giving you a big thank you! The DSU Volunteering team will be giving out golden tickets to volunteers all week; all you need to do is bring your ticket along on this Friday for free food and our mini certificate ceremony.

We’re ending SVW 2016 with bang on Saturday 27 February with our annual DSU Sleep Out. You, along with lots of other students can spend the night out on the Campus Centre steps to raise money for Action Homeless, a local charity that supports homeless and vulnerably housed people across the city and county. It's an extremely popular and rewarding event and a fitting end to a great Student Volunteering Week.

Oh, and if that’s not enough, we’ll have a new volunteering case study every day on our website with our ‘Day in the Life’ series. You can find out how other DMU students have volunteered through DSU and done something unforgettable.

And after all that volunteering, don’t forget to log your hours to add to your HEAR report and boost your employability. You can also head to the Student Volunteering Week pages here for more information including volunteering information, case studies and daily round ups plus much, much more!
