As part of Student Volunteering Week, DSU Volunteering will be providing daily updates of what our volunteers got up to. Find out more about our History of DSU Exhibition, Steppers in a school and some brand new student-led projects.
Day one of Student Volunteering Week launched with the DMU Steppers visiting a local school in Humberstone to perform in front of primary school pupils. The Steppers have reported this event to be a massive success and have been asked by one of the school's teachers to come back in the future; the Steppers are currently looking at planning what they can do to volunteer in schools on a long term basis and teach stepping.
Elsewhere, we opened our new exhibition titled 'Welcome to the History of DSU' on the ground floor of the Campus Centre. In a three hour period more than 50 students and staff visited the exhibition and got to see and have conversations about amazing RAG events of the past like the pram races of the 1950s and find out what DSU's societies were up to in the days of Leicester Polytechnic as well as viewing our past sporting glories.
DSU Volunteering hosted sessions with charities Coping With Cancer, Action Homeless, DMU's UniBoob Team and the Lead Your Own Volunteering group. This saw some brilliant conversations, and from this we have had two brand new student-led volunteering applications come in looking at supporting the DMU Dance Society in schools by volunteering and working with Cheek2Cheek.
Finally, Demon Media's Rahil Pabari and DSU Community Events Frontrunner Caylee Gutsell travelled to City Hall in London to showcase their contribution to SVW's Midlands camapign.
Caylee and Rahil coordinated a video that showcases why students at DMU and other Midlands universities and students' unions get involved in student volunteering, and their video was played at the prestigious National Student Volunteer of the Year event which includes NUS Vice President Union Development, Richard Brooks, amongst many other student volunteers and other high profile attendees.
Thank you to all our volunteers who got involved today! Make sure you get involved in Charity Challenge day on Tuesday.
