This Student Volunteering Week we’re telling the stories of just some of the fantastic volunteers at De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU). Here’s Viktoria Kovalcikova from the DMU Steppers…
Why did you get involved in Volunteering at DSU?
I got involved with volunteering at DMU as I wanted to enhance my employability skills, as professional development is a well regarded area on my course. My first volunteering position at DMU, was as part of the DMU Steppers Committee and from then on I was hooked. DMU Steppers have a long tradition of working within the community, thus my first role was teaching a community class (in stepping). I continued on as I found it interesting and fun, I was learning so much and growing as a person. All the activities that I became involved in have given me so much experience and knowledge.
What is the best experience you have had whilst volunteering?
The best experience I have had whilst volunteering has to be during the 2016 DSU Sleepout, that I was involved in. It gave me an opportunity to learn more about a very real and impending issue in today's day and age. I was able to try and help make a change. It was also one of the most interesting experiences, and despite the cold, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
What would you say to anyone thinking about volunteering?
Volunteering is one of the best things I could have done while at DMU. Volunteering has provided me with so much experience and allowed me to develop both professionally and as a person. It has enhanced my professional skills, as alongside community related projects, I have also participated in many other volunteering positions which have been and still are closely related to my Fine Art degree. Volunteering is amazing for networking. DMU has so much to offer, and volunteering whilst here is an opportunity that cannot be missed.
Viktoria is also the treasurer of DSU's Steppers society.
