Why did you get involved in Volunteering at DSU?

I got involved with volunteering as part of the Swim and Tri committee because I had watched other people do it and admired them and wanted to carry on and improve the amazing work that they had done for the team previously.

The chance to apply for this role, regardless of my ability within the team, is one of my greatest pleasure of joining university.

What is the best experience you have had whilst volunteering?

The best experience for me, as always, is the End of Year Meal.

The reason behind this is because you can look back on the year that has passed and the people that you have spent it with and not only see that your hard work was well appreciated but also because you can look back on all the people you have met and, through making them part of the team, the lives that you have helped to improve through making them a part of something.

The sense that I get of having bought people into the team and giving them the experience that I had in first year of being part of an amazing family, is what makes it worthwhile.

What would you say to anyone thinking about volunteering?

If you think you have the time to do the role well and are passionate about whatever you are getting involved in, do it. Don’t think about everything that could go wrong and how it will make your life more difficult. It will be worth it; I can guarantee you that much.

Taking part in volunteering will change not only your life but also someone else’s for the better, and if you’re passionate about it, you won’t even notice the hours tick by. My time volunteering as part of the Swim and Tri committee has been the best part of my university experience and I would not change it for the world.
