Hello, my name’s Ollie. As a Business and Management student at DMU, I’ve been involved in a variety of extra-curricular groups, ranging from volunteering at a primary school in Cape Town to travelling to China on an academic trip. Additionally, I achieved high first-class grades in my first and second year of study, while also completing my year in industry at General Electric Aviation.
I believe these experiences would make me successful in the role of Course Representative, as they have not only taught me the importance of hard-work, perseverance and discipline, but how the use of communication, approachableness and teamwork can achieve the best possible results. Therefore, I believe transferring these skills to this role would allow me to listen to any issues within the student body, and ensure they are actioned by the appropriate member of staff.
Additionally, these experiences have shown me the benefit of participating in the multitude of activities available at DMU. Last year’s graduate survey recognised that it’s harder for graduates to find success in the graduate job market without previously participating in relevant extra-curricular activities or work experience. This, combined with the reduction of graduate jobs caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, highlights the importance of employability enhancement schemes, such as DMU Global, DMU Square Mile and DMU Works.
Therefore, I will prioritise working with these student schemes to discuss increasing the involvement that they have within the Business and Management course, as involvement in internships, volunteering and international academic trips is becoming exceedingly vital for graduate success.
If my application is successful, I promise to be a non-judgemental, proactive and open-minded figure that will listen to all members of the student body.
Thank you for reading my manifesto, and please vote for ‘Oliver Johns’ as Year 4 – Business & Management Course Representative.
