Candidate for the position of Year 4 Representative:History - Rep

Francesca Owens

Hi there, I'm running for the role of course representative for the History MA course because I am passionate about making sure that postgraduate students are heard within the department and have a voice in their education. Such points are necessary as it means that such students can give honest feedback about the content and teaching of their course. Which, when responded to appropriately, can only improve the history department both for current and future students.

It would be best if you voted for me because I have the relevant experience to suit the role. Firstly, as I held the position throughout my undergraduate degree, and therefore am acquainted with the kind of work necessary for a candidate to fulfil other students' expectations, i.e. attending meetings with staff and the department, listening to student's problems and relaying them to the team and then explaining to other students what is going to happen to resolve the issues. Secondly, I am also a student ambassador and so have experience representing both students and the university to the public. Meaning that I am already aware of the sort of issues that students face, and as I've said, know how to go about beginning to resolve.

The sort of issues that are facing students right now include;

  • Concerns with remaining safe on campus during the COVID pandemic
  • Concerns with how assessments have changed since the pandemic began

To solve these problems, I would ensure that members of staff are aware of exactly why students are not happy. Then I would ensure that these issues are then taken to the heads of department or any other relevant members of university staff to be discussed within the bi-annual meetings and resolved for all, including current and future students.
