Jiu-Jitsu & Self Defence

Please note that due to covid-19 restrictions, various university clubs (including ours) are restricted in what training we are able to offer, and what classes members can attend. As government advice changes, so does what we are allowed to do.
We recommend joining our club as a member and then following us on facebook etc. to keep up to date with when and how we can train, and also get access to any online content we produce! Any questions, please feel free to contact us and ask.

What is Jiu Jitsu?

“Jiu jitsu is a physical and mental discipline that provides effective self defence and self development. It is a traditional Japanese martial art that has been tried and tested over many hundreds of years, with a wide variety of techniques which include joint locks, throws, ground work, weapon defences, immobilisation and strikes to nerve points and vulnerable parts.

It takes a rational approach to the way the body works and how to make the best use of your size and strength when dealing with an attacker. Today it is found in many self defence and restraint techniques used by police and armed forces the world over, and is the basis of the physical skills taught in most self defence courses. Practice of Jiu Jitsu encourages awareness, confidence and adaptability to circumstances. These are crucial elements in personal safety. - Aiuchi Jiu Jitsu

Who are we?

No description available.

We are DMU Jiu Jitsu and Self Defence. We were first set up in 1991, and are one of the longest running Sports societies at De Montfort University. Our training sessions are taught by Sensei Martin, a 3rd Dan Black Belt who has been teaching here for over two decades.

Our club is a mixed sex club and anyone can join, no matter your age, experience or fitness levels. It's a great way to meet new people, keep fit and gain confidence and new skills!

We are a fun-loving bunch, and not every session is “super serious”. We love to go out together and organise various social events throughout the year. We also organise joint socials with other clubs, attend national events and jiu-jitsu courses, go to parties and balls, holidays and a bunch of other events all over the place!

How can I get involved?!

Our training sessions take place at the universities Queen Elizabeth II Leisure Centre, in the upstairs studio. All you need to do is turn up. These happen twice a week:

Tuesday 19:30 - 22:00
Thursday 20:00 - 22:00

Want to see more?

Where can we find you online?

By email:

  • info@jitsu.net (for queries about sessions, and technical stuff)

Or by Social Media!

There is also a special facebook group for joined up club members, where we post extra content, make announcements, and you can talk to other club members and have a laugh! You can find that here!
