Group of happy students

Your student union represent students across the university, including underrepresented students from six key communities: Disabled Students, Women, LGBTQ+ students, Mature Students, Global Majority students, and Parents, Carers and Guardians. These Liberation communities have a long and important history of amplifying student voices, driving change, and improving representation.

However, over recent years, many students have told us that the current system is not always working as well as it could. Some have found it difficult to connect with others in their community, to know where or how to share feedback, or to feel genuinely heard and represented.

We have heard you.
And because of that, we are reshaping Liberation Communities.

What is changing?

In previous years, we elected both full-time Student Voice Leaders and part-time, voluntary Liberation Officers and Faculty Leads. This year, we will not be running elections for the part-time Liberation Officer roles.

Rather than continuing with a model that students have told us can feel inaccessible or disconnected, we want to take the time to design something more student focused, inclusive, and effective.

Our aim remains the same: ensuring underrepresented student voices are represented but in a way that works better for today’s students.

The Liberation Communities Consultation

To do this properly, we are launching a Liberation Communities Consultation, led by your Inclusion and Wellbeing Student Voice Leader Dilpreet. This consultation is an opportunity for students to directly shape the future of Liberation Officers and Liberation Networks at our university.

This will be an interactive, welcoming session where students from liberation groups can:

  • Share their lived experiences

  • Reflect on what currently works, what doesn’t, and what feels missing

  • Answer guided questions about representation, community, and support

  • Help co-design liberation networks that genuinely connect and empower students

Your feedback will directly influence decisions going forward.

Who should get involved?

We are hoping to speak to students directly from these communities, but this consultation is for you if you’re interested in:

  • Equity, diversity, and inclusion

  • Wellbeing, belonging, and community

  • Student representation and positive change

  • Strengthening underrepresented student voices

Whether you’ve previously engaged with Liberation roles or never felt they were for you, your perspective matters.

Why take part?

By joining the consultation, you will:

  • Have a real say in shaping your student experience

  • Help build stronger, more connected liberation communities

  • Gain valuable experience in consultation, leadership, and collaboration

  • Contribute to meaningful change you can talk about in future job or internship applications

Most importantly, this is about listening to students and co-creating something that will shape the culture, atmosphere, and sense of belonging across our university.

We look forward to listening, learning, and working with you to build the future of Liberation Communities.

Come along, share your thoughts, and be part of shaping what comes next.
