This Student Volunteering Week we’re telling the stories of just some of the fantastic volunteers at De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU). Here’s Emma Simpson…

Why did you get involved in Volunteering at DSU?

For me volunteering is a opportunity to engage and learn within many areas whilst I can, after completing a BA in fine art, my old university did not have any opportunities so DMU excelled in that department which is why I chose to come. I am currently a student  rep on my MSC course reason being; I believe we all need to be heard to help benefit our education, not to mention the opportunity to help shape the course for future students, but also to ensure I have the best start to my career. Also with playing lacrosse for a good few years I am able to help run sessions when the committee  need it, which is a great opportunity to use my leadership skills. I do it because I enjoy helping but also to learn and help others learn.

What is the best experience you have had whilst volunteering?

For me that has to be working with Leicester Comedy Festival, I currently run their street team, it is a completely new aspect of the festival and because of DSU volunteering I am able to excel in my industry because of this opportunity.

What would you say to anyone thinking about volunteering?

Do it, do it, do it, without my experience from volunteering I would not have achieved as much as I have, I doubt I would even be studying a masters, volunteering shapes you in a way your academic study can not. Don't miss out on an opportunity to help shape your career.

Emma currently volunteers with Leicester Comedy Festival, and heads up their 'street team'.
