Slogan - The more variety, the better society

Hello, I hope you are doing well

This is Clifford Fernandes; I am a second year Business HND student and I have nominated myself for the post of ‘Equality and Diversity Executive’. I believe that every DMU student should enjoy their university experience and their voices on the university matters are taken in consideration.

My story

I was born in a country where one of the things it is well known for is celebrating different regional cultures, that country is India; fortunately, in my childhood years I have experience and understood different cultures in India through festivals, friends, foods, films etc. I can speak Hindi, Konkani and English. I am fascinated to learn and understand about the different cultures around the world because every culture is different and unique in their own way; I believe that the more you learn about different cultures you will less likely to stereotypes people based on their appearance and what they believe in.

To be honest, being from a different country and having a shy personality made me feel sometime left out in the UK. So, I decided this new year, I will take part in the activities which challenges me to build a strong and positive personality.

My experience

I was elected as a Course Representative by the course group members for BTEC Business Level 3 Year 1 course in Leicester College. My duties were to attend the Course Rep meetings to represent my course group members’ views on their course, and, rules and regulation of Leicester College. After the Course Rep meeting, my next responsibility was to discuss what had happened in the meeting to the course members and my main lecture tutor.

My ideas

Cultural societies and diversity – l believe that most DMU students are not fully aware of the existence of DMU cultural societies, I will make sure to promote these societies to create an awareness. I will ensure that I work effectively with these societies and support them when they are in need. I will encourage DMU students to be part of different cultural societies this will help them to understand life in a different perspective.

BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) students – I recently discovered that most BAME students are not performing very well in their studies, I will ensure that I work with the DSU BAME Students' Representative to come up with the solution to solve this issue.

Disengaged students – I will try my best to help shy students to get involve in the extracurricular activities happening in DMU, I believe this will eventually help them in improving their confidence and believing more in themselves.

Thank you for reading my manifesto.
