DSU bids farewell to much-loved member of our Officer Team

DSU’s VP Welfare and Community, Jessica Okwuonu, has resigned from her post with immediate effect due to personal reasons.

De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU)’s Vice President (VP) Welfare and Community, Jessica Okwuonu, has resigned from her post with immediate effect due to personal reasons.

Jessica first joined our Officer Team in 2017, and voluntarily returned this summer pending the outcome of DSU’s thorough review of our Constitution and democratic processes.

During her 15-month term, Jessica has worked on a number of diverse campaigns for students at De Montfort University (DMU), from Black History Month and our first Drinkaware crew, to encouraging women to run for leadership roles and fighting for sustainability issues on the DMU campus and beyond.

Jessica – who graduated from her Information Communication Technology course in July 2017 – set up the Cheek2Cheek society during her time as a student in order to encourage wellbeing and promote happiness, and most recently launched DSU’s #NotOnMyCampus anti-discrimination campaign in Berlin.

She has also been heavily involved with student politics on a national level through her work with the National Union of Students (NUS), and worked closely with colleagues at DMU on a number of campaigns including ‘I Love Consent’ and the Mandala Project.

The remaining members of the Officer Team – and our team of Student Champions – will take responsibility for covering the role of VP Welfare and Community to ensure the welfare of our more than 27,000 student members remains at the top of our agenda.

Jessica will be missed by all the team at DSU and we would like to take this opportunity to thank Jessica for all of her hard work for students at DMU, and wish her the very best for the future.
